I drove to Omaha with Taylor and Phoebe last Tuesday. It was a really smooth trip! We left at 10:30am, had one long lunch stop and short bathroom break, and arrived at just a little past 6pm. Taylor watched Toy Story, Toy Story 2, had a great nap, and then watched Wall-E which ended right before we got to my parent's neighborhood. (Note: Wall-E is not nearly as interesting to listen to as the Toy Story movies and should not be played near the driver's nap time. Yaaaawn.) Phoebe, who is usually very squeaky on long trips, was quiet and comfortable in her large black cage in the back of the car (instead of her usual travel carrier).
I was so surprised at the ease of this trip, it kind of made me wonder why I didn't do it sooner. Taylor adored being around her Lolo and Lola, Phoebe relished the great big yard (even running away twice during the week), and I realized how much I missed the open space of Nebraska. Likely, I won't really get an opportunity to do the trip again with only one child. We only have 3 months left to go before the D-Day!
Mark flew up to Omaha on Thursday night just in time for dinner and beer (Belzebuth Ale) at Dario's. It sounded like he really enjoyed the speakers at the BigOmaha conference on Fri and Sat, though he was very happy to skip out on the parties every evening to spend time with the family. He ended up with two funny cow t-shirts from the conference and a free pre-publication copy of a book written by the CEO of Zappo's.
On Saturday, my mom put him to work in her yard doing some heavy lifting! They expanded her backyard garden quite a bit, transplanting trees and bushes and laying down lots of soil and river rock. We even found two benches and a little doggie statue for the garden - perfect for grandparents and little grandchildren. (More photos of the garden and other weekend events here.)
I spent most days there driving around the city - either meeting my parents or old friends for lunch, or getting my hair cut. I got a few little sewing projects done that had been neglected for the past two years and my mom and I made a fantastic co-sleeping pillow out of old bedsheets, which beats paying full-price for one like this.
We drove home on Sunday and have just been getting things back in order around the house. Last night was our End-of-the-Year Party for our Bible study group. Mark and I are looking forward to the summer break from that part of our church leadership responsibilities. We'll still be helping out with the Children's Ministry until the baby comes along, which is about the time when Bible studies start up again. :)
Ok, off to Trader Joe's. We're out of milk and all sorts of fresh fruits and veggies. Must restock.
